NATURAL AFRICAN CARVED RUBY (MANIK) - 8.55 CT
Natural Carved Ruby (Longo Dongo Mines) – A Sculpted Ruby Gemstone of Artistry and Colour
Natural carved ruby brings together the deep red beauty of ruby and the patient craft of gem carving, in which a stone is shaped into leaves, flowers, and floral relief designs instead of the sharp facets of a traditional cut. This ruby gemstone belongs to the corundum family, the same mineral family as fine sapphire, and ranks 9 on the Mohs scale, which makes it one of the hardest gemstones a carver can work with. Each piece is shaped and polished into a smooth, sculpted form that catches the light differently from a faceted stone, and no two carvings are ever exactly alike. At Gemttorae, every carved ruby is selected for the richness of its colour and the care of its carving, with treatment details clearly communicated so customers always know what they are buying.
The Art of Gemstone Carving
Gem carving is among the oldest lapidary crafts in the world, and in India its tradition stretches back to the Indus Valley period, with Jaipur becoming one of the country’s most important centres for gemstone work. A carver usually begins by studying the cracks and colour of the rough stone, sketches the design on its surface, and removes the bulk of the material with a grinder before refining the details. Because ruby is so hard, the fine work is done with small diamond tools, since nothing softer can cut it, and the stone is then polished and oiled to bring out its colour and shine. In relief carving, the background is cut away so that a flower or leaf stands out in raised form, and the depth, symmetry, and smoothness of that design are what separate a fine piece from an ordinary one.
Understanding Treatment and Natural Authenticity
Carved ruby is made from natural ruby, but the material chosen for carving is often more included and more fractured than the clean crystals selected for faceting. For this reason, many carved rubies are glass-filled or heat-treated, which fills surface-reaching fractures and improves the appearance of both colour and transparency. This enhancement is widely used and accepted in the gemstone trade when it is properly disclosed, and it is a large part of why carved ruby is available at accessible prices. At Gemttorae, the treatment status of each stone is stated clearly, and certification can be provided where applicable, so buyers can choose with confidence. As with all treated stones, a glass-filled carving needs gentle care and should be kept away from harsh chemicals, acid-based cleaners, and extreme heat.
Benefits of Ruby
Ruby has long been called the king of gemstones, and this manik stone carries that heritage in a more artistic form. It is traditionally associated with courage, vitality, confidence, leadership, and a strong sense of purpose, and many people connect its deep red colour with warmth, passion, and personal power. Carved shapes such as leaves and flowers are also often chosen for their symbolism of growth, renewal, and natural beauty, which gives the stone a gentler meaning alongside its bold colour. Many wearers simply love the craftsmanship and the rich red tone as a statement of personal style. These associations belong to traditional and cultural belief and are not scientifically established.
Manik Stone in Vedic Astrology
In Vedic astrology, ruby is known as Manik and is the primary gemstone of the Sun (Surya), the planet linked to authority, vitality, self-confidence, leadership, and the father. Traditionally, a Manik is set in gold and worn on the ring finger, often beginning on a Sunday morning, although practices vary between astrologers. It is important to note that carved ruby is chosen mainly as a jewellery stone, and most astrologers prefer a clean, untreated, faceted ruby for formal planetary remedies, since treated or heavily included stones are generally considered less suitable for that purpose. Anyone considering a ruby stone for astrological reasons should consult a qualified Vedic astrologer, who can advise on the right stone, weight, and wearing method for their birth chart.
The Longido Mines of Tanzania
Longido, in Tanzania’s Arusha region, is one of the longest-known ruby localities in Africa, with rubies first discovered there more than a century ago. The area’s main operation, the Mundarara mine, is among the largest ruby mines in the country, and the district has long been known for ruby-in-zoisite as well as for rough that can be cut as cabochons or facets. Gemologists have found that Longido rubies are very rich in chromium and relatively low in iron, which is what gives them a rich red to purplish-red colour. This combination makes Longido material a natural choice for carving, since carving-grade ruby can show strong colour even when it is too included to be faceted.
