Lab-Created Moissanite – A Brilliant Diamond Alternative Born from the Stars

Moissanite is one of the most fascinating gemstones in the modern jewellery world, discovered in 1893 by French chemist Henri Moissan in fragments of a meteorite recovered from Canyon Diablo, Arizona. Composed of silicon carbide, this mineral is so rare in its natural form that virtually all moissanite available in jewellery today is created in a laboratory, grown under carefully controlled conditions to be chemically, physically, and optically identical to the stone Moissan first discovered. At Gemttorae, every moissanite is carefully selected for its brilliance, clarity, and precision cut, offering a genuinely ethical and conflict-free alternative to mined gemstones.

A Stone Discovered in a Meteorite Crater

The story behind moissanite is unlike that of any other gemstone in modern jewellery. Henri Moissan initially mistook the tiny crystals he found at Canyon Diablo for diamonds, before identifying them as an entirely new mineral, a discovery that later contributed to his 1906 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Natural moissanite remains so scarce that commercial mining of it has never been viable, which is why scientists spent decades developing a reliable laboratory process to recreate it, finally succeeding in the 1990s. This origin story, part cosmic discovery and part scientific achievement, gives moissanite a genuinely distinctive identity among gemstones used in fine jewellery today.

Exceptional Brilliance and Durability

Moissanite is prized for qualities that, in several respects, exceed those of diamond. It carries a Mohs hardness of approximately 9.25, making it one of the hardest materials used in jewellery after diamond itself, and highly resistant to scratching and everyday wear. Its refractive index and dispersion are both higher than diamond's, which means moissanite produces noticeably more fire and rainbow-coloured flashes of light under direct illumination. Because it is doubly refractive, light passing through the stone splits in a way that can make its facets appear subtly doubled when viewed closely, a distinctive optical signature unique to this material.

Moissanite vs Diamond

Moissanite is frequently compared to diamond because of its similar brilliance and hardness, though the two are entirely different materials with their own distinct characteristics. Diamond is pure carbon formed naturally deep within the earth over billions of years, while moissanite is silicon carbide, almost universally lab-created today given the extreme rarity of natural material. Moissanite typically costs a small fraction of a comparable diamond, while offering greater fire and nearly comparable hardness, making it an increasingly popular choice for those who want a brilliant, durable stone at a significantly more accessible price.

Perfect for Fine and Bridal Jewellery

The bright, fiery sparkle of moissanite makes it an excellent choice for engagement rings, pendants, and earrings, particularly for buyers seeking the visual impact of diamond without the associated cost or mining footprint. It pairs beautifully with white gold and platinum for a classic, contemporary look, while yellow gold and rose gold offer warmer alternatives. Popular cuts include Round Brilliant, Oval, Cushion, and Emerald, each designed to maximise the stone's exceptional fire and brilliance.

Natural gemstones are timeless treasures that deserve proper care. With the right handling and maintenance, your gemstone can retain its beauty and brilliance for generations.

  • Clean Gently: Use lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft microfiber cloth or soft-bristled brush. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Store Safely: Keep each gemstone or jewellery piece in a separate soft pouch or lined jewellery box to prevent scratches and accidental damage.
  • Avoid Impact: Although many gemstones are durable, strong knocks or sudden impacts can cause chips or fractures.
  • Protect from Chemicals: Remove gemstone jewellery before using household cleaners, perfumes, cosmetics, or swimming in chlorinated pools.
  • Limit Heat Exposure: Excessive heat or rapid temperature changes may affect certain natural gemstones. Store them away from direct sunlight and high temperatures.
  • Wear with Care: Put on gemstone jewellery after applying makeup, lotions, or perfumes, and remove it before exercising, gardening, or heavy manual work.
  • Regular Inspection: Check gemstone settings periodically to ensure the stone remains secure. If you notice any looseness, have the jewellery inspected by a qualified jeweller.

At Gemttorae, we believe every natural gemstone deserves exceptional care. Following these simple care guidelines will help preserve your gemstone's natural beauty, allowing you to enjoy it for years to come.
